How to Read Your Kundli — A Free Beginner's Guide
Your Kundli (birth chart) is a photograph of the sky at the exact second you were born. This guide teaches you to look at that photograph and actually see something — no Sanskrit degree required.
Step 1 — The Lagna: where your story starts
The Lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It changes every ~2 hours, which is why exact birth time matters so much. The Lagna is house #1 — your body, temperament and the lens through which the whole chart is read. Everything else is counted from it.
Step 2 — The 12 houses: life's departments
Each house (bhaav) governs a life area. When a planet sits in a house, it energises that department:
Step 3 — The rashis: the flavour of each house
The 12 zodiac signs (Mesha/Aries through Meena/Pisces) colour how a house behaves. A 10th house in fiery Aries pursues career like a soldier; the same house in watery Cancer builds a career through care and connection. In North Indian charts the houses stay fixed and the sign numbers rotate; in South Indian charts the signs stay fixed. Same sky, two notations.
Step 4 — The 9 grahas: the actors

A quick reading is simply: which actor (graha), on which stage (house), in which costume (rashi)? Jupiter in the 2nd in Sagittarius: wisdom expanding the wealth house in its own generous sign — classically a giver of family prosperity.
Step 5 — Dashas: the timeline
A chart shows potential; dashas show when. The Vimshottari system assigns each planet a ruling period in a 120-year cycle (Moon 10y, Mars 7y, Rahu 18y, Jupiter 16y, Saturn 19y…). The same strong career yoga may sleep quietly for decades and then deliver everything in one Jupiter antardasha. This is why two people with similar charts live different years.
